Eminent legal scholar, Prof M T LADAN Calls for Action on MIGRATION GOVERNANCE, While Implementing the 2025 Revised National MIGRATION Policy.

At the 2025 National Migration Dialogue held at the Abuja Continental Hotel’s Ladi Kwali Conference Centre on December 18th, renowned scholar Professor M.T. Ladan praised the event’s theme as “apt, topical, and relevant.” The dialogue, organized by the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and IDPs (NCFRMI), served as a pivotal platform to transition Nigeria’s migration strategy from blueprint to reality.

In a compelling special remark, Prof. Ladan laid out a comprehensive framework for action, anchored on the implementation of Nigeria’s recently Revised 2025 National Migration Policy. He emphasized that the dialogue marks a crucial shift from policy formulation to concrete execution, with a laser focus on governance and development.

The Core Agenda: From Paper to Progress

Prof. Ladan underscored several critical pillars for national progress:

Actionable Governance: Moving beyond drafting documents to practically executing the 2025 policy, with strengthened coordination across all levels of government.

Security & Rights: Enhancing border management and data systems for security while firmly upholding the protection and rights of all migrants and victims of trafficking.

Harnessing the Diaspora: Maximizing the development potential of the Nigerian diaspora through structured engagement, remittances, and brain circulation.

Tackling Root Causes: Directly addressing the drivers of migration such as youth unemployment, economic hardship, and insecurity to create sustainable alternatives at home.

Inclusive Reintegration: Ensuring returning migrants receive support for dignified and sustainable reintegration into society, with special attention to the needs of women, youth, and children.

A Modern Blueprint for a Global Nigeria

The professor highlighted that the Revised 2025 National Migration Policy, unveiled by the NCFRMI in April 2025, serves as a modern blueprint designed to manage the complexities of contemporary migration. It aligns Nigeria with global standards like the UN Global Compact for Migration and addresses pressing realities from brain drain to climate-induced displacement.

“In essence,” Prof. Ladan concluded, “this dialogue is about operationalizing a forward-looking policy to make migration safe, orderly, and beneficial for all. It is a definitive move from mere policy to concrete action and grassroots impact.”

The event has set a new momentum, positioning Nigeria to proactively shape its migration landscape as a catalyst for national development.
